Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko on Sunday urged the State government to construct new buildings at the Gandarvakottai Government Hospital in Pudukottai district.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the hospital, he said that it was his second visit to the hospital. He had inspected it on January 4, 2025 and pointed out several shortcomings including lack of even basic facilities. Buildings were so dilapidated that they were in danger of collapsing any time, he said.

Only two-phase electricity in a three-phase connection was functioning. The morgue and toilets were not functional for want of drainage and brought it to the notice of the then Health Minister and urged him to take immediate steps to construct new buildings, wherever they were required and provide all needed basic facilities.

However, Mr. Durai Vaiko said that work had not been started so far. He presented a memorandum to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay when he met him in Chennai a few days ago, urging him to take steps to construct new buildings at the hospital. Based on it, the Public Works Department had taken up follow up measures.

The MP said that additional funds should be allocated to the hospital, which was in a worse condition than before. He had pointed out the shortcomings to the officials. With the expeditious steps taken by the new government, he hoped that new buildings would soon be constructed at the Gandharvakottai Government Hospital and quality treatment facilities would be made available to the people.
