A 79-year-old woman was found murdered by unidentified assailants, who took away the gold jewellery worn by her, at Krishnarayapuram near Karur on Sunday night.
The victim was identified as P. Thayarammal of Uppidamangalam village. The police said the woman, who was living alone in her house, was asleep on a cot in the front yard when the assailants tied her hands, legs and gagged her and took away 1.5 sovereigns of gold earrings and a nosepin. She was found dead on Monday morning by her neighbours.
Upon receiving the information, the Velliyanai police conducted inquiries at the scene of the crime and shifted the body to the government hospital at Krishnarayapuram for post-mortem. A case has been registered, and the police are investigating.
