Demis Hassabis did not wait for a job description to tell him who to become. He was coding games as a teenager, moving across chess, computing, neuroscience, and entrepreneurship long before DeepMind made him a global name. The useful lesson is not genius as mythology; it is habit. Mr. Hassabis learned by making things, and that posture is what students should be copying now.

Why does this matter now? Because the first rung of the career ladder is visibly narrowing. Stanford, using ADP payroll data on 25 million workers, finds employment of 22–25-year-old software developers is down about 16%, relative to older workers since late 2022, with software developers and customer service roles among the most affected. Large employers are openly trimming graduate intake, and AI is compressing the very junior roles once used to train young professionals. Studying first and building later is no longer the safer path. Building now is.

Robotics and agentic AI are uniquely powerful classrooms because they refuse to let students hide inside one discipline. The moment a robot arm misbehaves, software, electronics, mechanics, perception, and human-interaction design all show up at once. That kind of friction-earned learning sticks in a way exam preparation never does. And critically, the on ramps have collapsed in cost.

Platforms like OpenClaw Robotics are pushing this further than most realise. On its own site, the project describes a zero-code paradigm where a learner says, “pick up the red cube and place it in the box” and embodied AI handles the reasoning. The community openly states that functional robotic systems can now be built for under $500, with depth perception deployed for under $200 — everything 3D-printable, modular, and fully documented. The hardware side is moving in lockstep. CNBC reported in April 2026 that Hangzhou-based EinClaw shipped a $43 clip-on mic that lets users send voice commands to an OpenClaw AI agent, and that JoyIn’s Zeroth M1 humanoid, which supports OpenClaw functions, is opening pre-orders. A teenager today can credibly assemble a working agentic-robotics stack on a school-fee budget.

China has noticed where this is heading and is paying for it in cash. According to draft policies reported by Business Insider and Fortune in March 2026, Shenzhen’s Longgang district is offering subsidies of up to two million yuan — roughly $290,000 — for projects tied to the OpenClaw ecosystem, plus two months of free accommodation and 18 months of preferential office space for newly registered one-person startups under a “one desk, one office, one floor” system. Wuxi’s high-tech zone goes further, dangling combined subsidies and financing of up to 10 million yuan — around $1.4 million — for major OpenClaw applications. Read that as policy intent, not curiosity: subsidise the toolchain so a single eighteen-year-old, armed with agents and cheap hardware, can ship a real product.

The structural answer for the rest of the world is to push hands-on building dramatically down the age curve — robotics in primary school, open-source contribution norms by high school, and first-year undergraduates submitting pull requests rather than waiting until final year. The infrastructure already exists. GitLab’s education program is live in 1,000-plus institutions across 65 countries with 3 million student users; it explicitly invites students to “get hands-on industry experience, earn swag and rewards, and make meaningful contributions to GitLab” and to “make a mark on open source software, while building a portfolio that demonstrates your skills to future employers.” That is the model engineering colleges in India and elsewhere should be plugging first-year students into from day one, not as a final-year internship.

In a market with fewer junior roles and cheaper tools than at any point in history, the advantage will go to the student who has already broken a few prototypes, debugged a few agents, and learned how messy real systems are. Mr. Hassabis’s posture, not his pedigree, is the curriculum. Start early. Build often. Let failure do the teaching.
