Five women vendors were fined and ordered to perform social service by a court after being booked for allegedly obstructing tourist pedestrians on the main road leading to the historic Charminar and Mecca Masjid.
According to the Charminar police, the women were repeatedly found selling artificial flower items on the pedestrian stretch between Gulzar Houz and Charminar, a route designated for tourists visiting the heritage sites. The accused were identified as Anju Singh, 19, Sabi Devi, 38, Manu Devi, 43, Manisha, 20, and Shakuntala, 36. Police said the women are natives of Alwar in Rajasthan and are currently residing at Nandanavanam near TKR Kaman in Meerpet.
Police said despite repeated warnings and requests to clear the pathway, the vendors allegedly continued their activities on the road, causing obstruction to pedestrian movement.
Following this, the Charminar police booked petty cases against them on May 23 under Section 66-C of the City Police Act and Section 292 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The five women were produced before the First Special Judicial Magistrate court on Monday, May 25. The court convicted them and imposed a fine of ₹200 on each. Apart from the fine, the court directed them to perform social service at the Charminar police station until 5 p.m. on Monday.
The Station House Officer of Charminar police station said strict action would continue against those encroaching on pedestrian pathways and roads in the heritage zone to ensure smooth movement for tourists and local commuters.
