City police have intensified their crackdown on illegal bike racing gangs that have been causing nuisance and serious inconvenience to commuters across key stretches.

The Beach Road, BRTS corridors, Telugu Thalli Flyover and Siripuram have emerged as hotspots for thrill-seeking youth who, using modified motorcycles fitted with high-decibel silencers, have been disturbing public peace, particularly during late-night hours. These activities pose a significant threat to road safety. Police said many of the youth coordinate through social media groups and upload videos of their stunts to gain online traction, encouraging others to follow suit.

Acting on repeated complaints from residents and regular commuters, the police launched a targeted enforcement drive on May 2 and 3. Special teams led by ADCP Traffic K. Praveen Kumar, under the supervision of Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi, carried out the operations.

During the drive, several youth were apprehended and 15 high-end motorcycles were seized while they were allegedly engaged in reckless racing on busy roads. Many of the vehicles were found to be illegally modified and were seized on the spot. The accused will be produced before the court.

Mr. K. Praveen Kumar said such acts not only violate traffic norms but also endanger lives, as racers often speed through crowded areas without regard for pedestrians and other motorists. He urged parents to closely monitor their children and counsel them against engaging in such risky behaviour.

Police warned that strict enforcement will continue, including imposition of hefty fines, seizure of vehicles and registration of criminal cases against offenders. They also appealed to the public to promptly report such incidents.

Officials added that CCTV surveillance is being expanded across the city to curb such activities, making it clear that unlawful racing will not be tolerated.
