Raising concerns over the recurring human-elephant conflict in Kodagu district, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, Mysuru and Kodagu MP, has urged the Centre to formulate a long-term strategy to mitigate the problem, while also seeking inclusion of Tippayyana Kere in Mysuru under the Nagar Van (Urban Forest) scheme.

During a meeting with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi, the MP submitted separate representations highlighting the urgent need for intervention in Kodagu, where frequent elephant incursions into farmlands and human settlements have led to loss of lives, crop damage, destruction of property and growing fear among residents.

Mr. Wadiyar said farmers, plantation workers and villagers residing along forest fringes continue to bear the brunt of the escalating conflict. He called for a comprehensive and sustainable mitigation plan, including strengthening elephant-proof barriers, expanding solar fencing, scientific monitoring of elephant movement, establishment of early warning systems, habitat improvement measures and deployment of rapid response teams.

The MP also sought enhanced compensation and support mechanisms for families and farmers affected by elephant attacks and crop losses. While wildlife conservation remains a priority, protecting the lives and livelihoods of people living near forests is equally important, he told the Minister.

Tippayyana Kere for Nagar Van scheme

In a separate representation, Mr. Wadiyar requested the Ministry to bring Tippayyana Kere, located near Mysuru’s Outer Ring Road and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, under the Centre’s Nagar Van scheme.

Describing the lake as an emerging biodiversity hotspot and recreational destination, he said the project would help expand Mysuru’s green cover, promote biodiversity conservation, create opportunities for environmental education and provide a healthier natural environment for residents.

According to the MP, Tippayyana Kere is ideally suited for the scheme owing to its ecological significance and growing role as a habitat for birds and other wildlife. He urged the Ministry to extend the required technical and financial assistance for the project.

Following the meeting, Mr. Wadiyar said both the Kodagu elephant conflict and Mysuru’s urban green infrastructure development require immediate attention from by the Centre and the State government.

The Union Minister assured the MP that the representations would be examined positively and appropriate action taken after consultations with the authorities concerned.
