The renovation of the historic Gandhi Memorial Museum at ₹10.25 crore is almost completed and the new facilities would be open to visitors in about two or three months, said School Education, Tamil Development and Information/Public Relations Minister A Rajmohan here on Sunday.

After going around the museum, he told reporters that it was important to keep the ancient and landmark places intact. The museum, which has been visited by the Mahatma, has his personal belongings displayed for the public.

The Minister said that the 17th century construction has significant artefacts and it takes every visitor to the dynasty days of Rani Mangammal. The open air auditorium, the multi-media conference hall and others are being given a facelift.

According to the museum secretary K.R. Nanda Rao and treasurer M. Senthil Kumar, 80 % of the renovation works has been completed. A few electric works and final touches had to be given in the newly constructed facilities.

The Minister, who is popular in social media and is known as a good communications expert, said that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay was keen on giving a drug-free Tamil Nadu.

“We are not blaming anyone or any government. In the larger interest of the younger generation, actions were being taken now,” he said.

The idea behind closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops across Tamil Nadu was to ensure that educational institutions were free from these outlets. Still many such announcements would come, he said and added that physical education was important to the students. All the schools should give importance to outdoor activities to the children and said that he had stressed about it during an interaction with the chief educational officers meeting held in Chennai on June 13.

Taking a number of questions, he politely responded and appealed to the journalists to understand the new government’s sincerity.

“Our CM is determined to deliver a model State in every sphere. You will all witness the change soon,” he summed up.
