A demolition drive to remove 143 unauthorised structures for a road-widening project in north-west Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh began on Sunday (May 31, 2026) after the Supreme Court dismissed a challenge to the scheme.
District Magistrate of Central-North district S.S. Parihar said the action was launched in Haiderpur village, where structures were found within the designated right of way of Road No. 320, a proposed corridor connecting the Shalimar Bagh Railway Under Bridge with the Outer Ring Road.
“The land forms part of acquired government property earmarked as a public road under the Delhi Development Authority’s Master Plan. The corridor is intended to improve connectivity between Shalimar Bagh, Azadpur, Ring Road and adjoining residential, commercial and institutional areas,” stated an official statement.
A joint survey by the Delhi Development Authority, Revenue Department, Land and Building Department and Public Works Department in January identified 143 permanent unauthorised structures within the prescribed right of way.
The Delhi government has announced relief for eligible affected families. “Under the scheme, each eligible family or unit will receive a one-time ex gratia payment of ₹3 lakh. Families without alternative accommodation in Delhi will be provided licence-based temporary housing for up to 11 months at Savda Ghevra,” the statement stated.
According to an official, the demolition exercise would continue until all encroachments within the project area are removed.
Demolitions continue in Faridabad
Demolition operations continued for a second day around Masjid Chowk in NIT-3 on Sunday (May 31, 2026) as authorities cleared encroachments for an elevated road project and the Gurugram-Faridabad-Noida Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System corridor.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dhirendra Khadagta said the action is being carried out in compliance with National Green Tribunal directions. Officials said earthmovers and police personnel remained at the site while debris was being cleared. The Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority has also begun work on a 90-metre slip road in the area.
