Suvendu urges BJP workers to follow law, says government will do ‘sabka hisab’

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday (May 24, 2026) said that along with ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ (everyone’s support, everyone’s progress), there will be ‘Sabka Hisab’ (holding everyone accountable).

While the slogan‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ has been coined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is often used by the rank and file of the BJP, the phrase ‘Sabka Hisab’ is targeted at the political opponents, particularly the Trinamool Congress leadership which had been in power over the past 15 years in the State.

Speaking in Nandigram, the Chief Minister advised party workers to exercise restraint and not break the law. “If you had wished, you could have dismantled every single brick from the houses of the goons. Yet do not take the law into your own hands. The only place awaiting all of them (Trinamool leaders) is jail. I will not spare a single criminal. Everyone will be held accountable,” Mr. Adhikari told a public meeting.

The Chief Minister was elected from Nandigram but had to resign after he decided to retain the Bhabanipur seat in Kolkata.

Pointing out that false cases were registered against 4,000 party workers in Nandigram, Mr. Adhikari went on to refer to the names of some of the BJP supporters who were targeted by the previous regime.

The Chief Minister said he will continue to remain available to the people of Nandigram in the future. “I will fulfil every promise I made during the election campaign. You will find me exactly as you have known me since 2003,” he said.

Mamata breaks silence

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee broke her silence and raised questions on the conduct of the Assembly polls her party lost.

“Was this truly an election, or merely a mockery in the name of democracy? Nearly one crore names were removed due to logical discrepancies. Rigging took place at counting centres. BJP workers allegedly entered wearing uniforms of the Central forces. Our agents’ ID cards were snatched away,” she alleged.

She urged the State administration to act in a fair manner. “I am not against the administration, but you are the protectors of the law. If you violate the law, you will be subject to its jurisdiction. I will also see whether the Constitution is greater than the barrel of a gun,” she said.

The Trinamool Congress chairperson said she had “built” institutions, but the new government was “destroying” them. “People did not receive Lakshmir Bhandar benefits. DA promises were made in the Budget. The Pay Commission implementation was promised and approved by the Cabinet. Old promises are now being repackaged,” she said.

Ms. Banerjee vowed to continue her fight against the BJP government. “We will fight against this bulldozer politics. I had rehabilitated hawkers. Through force, they are now being deprived of their livelihoods,” she said.
