The Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited has bifurcated the Tiruchi District Co-operative Milk Producers Union and created a new union with jurisdiction over Perambalur and Ariyalur districts.

Padalur in Perambalur district will be the headquarters of the new milk producers’ union, with an office building and a chilling centre, to cater to an estimated 300 cooperate milk producers’ societies. The new union has started functioning and it will be the 21st union of Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited.

Ariyalur district came into existence on November 23, 2007. It was carved out from Perambalur district. It was officially formed on September 30,1995, with the trifurcation of the erstwhile Tiruchi district. Perambalur district further underwent mergers and re-divisions and the district was reconstituted to its present form on April 19, 2002. However, along with Karur district, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts remained part of the Tiruchi District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union for several years.

The Tiruchi Union was bifurcated and the Karur District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union was registered on August 26, 2019. With the establishment of a new union headquartered at Perambalur, the Tiruchi Union will have jurisdiction of all areas under the Tiruchi district.

As many as 685 Milk Producers’ Co-op. Societies are functioning and supplying milk to Tiruchi Union. According to an estimate, the milk procurement of Tiruchi Union will reach about 5.25 lakh litres of milk per day during winter and about 4.5 lakh litres per day in summer season. With the establishment of a new union from the Tiruchi Union, its procurement is expected to come down to about 2 lakh litres per day.

The Aavin’s milk processing plant at Padalur in Perambalur district has good infrastructure. The unit has a feature with fully automated machinery right from taking the milk cans at the outer end to production of ghee at the other corner of the processing plant. It is spread over a sprawling area of 22 acres. It can process about 2.5 lakh litres of milk per day, said a senior official.
