An Assamese youth was beaten up by local people here on Friday night after he reportedly harassed a minor girl playing in the Corporation park.

The injured person has been admitted to the Government Hospital in Sivakasi.

According to police, the youth was fully drunk and had waved at the children playing in the park. When the elders accompanying the children scolded him, he had walked away a little distance at around 8.30 p.m.

However, when the children had come out of the park, the youth again waved at them. As the girl’s aunt shouted at him, the autorickshaw drivers and others who were around had reportedly beaten him up black and blue.

They also alerted the police. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

While no police complaint has been received so far, the police said that further enquiry could be held only after the youth became sober.
