The Thiruvananthapuram City Police have submitted a chargesheet in a case related to the alleged attempt to attack former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan aboard a flight.
The chargesheet was filed before the Thiruvananthapuram Principal District and Sessions Court against Youth Congress leaders accused in the incident.
While charges relating to attempted murder and criminal conspiracy have been invoked in the case, provisions under aviation laws were excluded while filing the chargesheet.
The incident took place in June 2022 when Mr. Vijayan was travelling from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram. During the flight, Youth Congress activists allegedly staged a protest against him. The Valiyathura police booked four Youth Congress workers in the case.
Initially, the case included provisions under aviation laws. However, the investigation faced setbacks because prosecution under such Sections required prior sanction from the Centre. The investigation team decided to drop the charges in the absence of the required approval.
In light of the developments, the case will likely be considered by the Thiruvananthapuram Judicial First Class Magistrate Court XI. The investigation team is expected to submit a fresh chargesheet prior to the trial.
