Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Coimbatore district in-charge Minister V. Sampath Kumar on Monday directed officials to explore solutions to address groundwater pollution in areas surrounding the Vellalore dumpyard.

During an inspection of civic infrastructure projects in the city, the Minister visited the Vellalore dumpyard, where officials briefed him on the progress of the second phase of biomining works. The phase aims to clear 7,94,138 tonnes of legacy waste spread across 84 acres. According to officials, 52% of the work has been completed. The Minister toured the facility and reviewed the ongoing operations.

He also inspected underground drainage (UGD) works in Ondipudur, the 24x7 drinking water supply project being implemented by Suez at AKS Nagar, and the flyover under construction at Saibaba Colony junction on Mettupalayam road.

Officials informed the Minister that around 50 km of pipeline-laying work remains to be completed along National Highways and State Highways under the drinking water project. The work is expected to be completed by August.

Reviewing the ₹71-crore Saibaba Colony junction flyover project, officials said 88% of the construction had been completed. Mr. Sampath Kumar said the flyover would be ready by August this year.

On the long-pending Vellalore bus terminus project, Mr. Sampath Kumar said the narrow approach roads leading to the site remained a key challenge. Discussions were under way on the approach roads and addressing other related issues to facilitate the revival of the project.

The Minister held discussions with officials on the progress of the projects and instructed them to ensure their completion within the stipulated timeframe.
