Daughters of low-income workers in the city secured high marks in the Class XII State Board examination. They aspire to pursue careers in chartered accountancy and the civil services.
K. Mythily, who scored 593 marks, said she wished to become a Chartered Accountant. Her father, Anandakumar, who runs a laundry and ironing shop in Aminjikarai, said Mythily was the first girl in the family to complete Class XII. “Seeing her score such high marks is a proud moment for us,” he said.
Her paternal grandmother and mother did not have access to higher education. “My father wanted me to get good education and supported me. To young girls like me, I would say — believe in yourself,” she said.
She has applied to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and the University of Madras to pursue B.Com., and plans to undergo coaching alongside her studies.

V. Dharshini with her family
“I am a tailor in Pudupet and stitch uniforms for police personnel. I studied only up to Class VII. I am proud that my daughter aspires to clear the civil services examination,” said S. Venkatesan, father of V. Dharshini, who scored 586 marks.
She is a student of Chennai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, M.H. Road.
Speaking to The Hindu, Dharshini said preparing for the civil services examination had long been her ambition. “It is also my mother’s dream. Since Class X, I have wanted to pursue it,” she said.
She plans to pursue a course in Defence and Strategic Studies. “Our school once took us to Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College in Vyasarpadi, where we learnt about various courses. I was told that this stream would help in preparing for the UPSC examination,” she added.
