Tamil Meenavar Kootamaipu on Wednesday urged the State government to implement the recommendations of Justice Aruna Jagadeesan Commission of Inquiry report on the 2018 Thoothukudi police firing incident that resulted in the killing of 13 people during the protest against the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi.

Addressing journalists at a press meet held in Madurai, president of the federation advocate A. Rajini said the Commission of Inquiry had concluded that the firing was unprovoked. The peaceful protesters were shot dead by the police personnel, she said.

Ms. Rajini said the protesters, unarmed, took to the streets with their family members. They were only raising environmental concerns. However, to curb their voices, the shooting took place. The recommendations of the Commission have not been considered yet, she said..

She said similar to Sattankulam custodial deaths case, the families of the protesters should also get justice. Compensation amount should be enhanced. The State government should pay a compensation of ₹One crore each to the families of the deceased and ₹50 lakh each to the families of the people who suffered serious injuries in the incident, she said.

A memorial should be built in Thoothukudi in memory of the people killed and injured in the incident, she said and added that she was hopeful that under the new regime, it would be constructed.

She recollected that in 2018 the now Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had visited the family of J. Snowlin who was killed in the police firing incident.

Ms. Rajini said appropriate departmental action should be taken against the police personnel involved in the incident.

The trial should be conducted and the police personnel involved should be punished, while the case against the protesters should be withdrawn. The compensation amount should be recovered from the erring police personnel, she said.
