In a special drive to curb activities affecting the law and order in the city, the Greater Chennai Police (GCP) intercepted 410 suspects and arrested 15 persons, including four history-sheeters.
The special operation was carried out on Friday on the orders of GCP Commissioner A. Amalraj to ensure the safety of the public and business establishments.
The arrested history-sheeters were identified as Vijay, alias Jackie, 22, and Kishore, alias Kishore Kumar, 25, from Kodungaiyur police limits; Sanjay, alias Dolu, 24, from MKB Nagar police limits; and Ramesh, alias Rangaraj, 25, from New Washermenpet police limits.
Anti-narcotics drive
In an anti-narcotics special drive conducted on the same day, the police conducted inspections at 86 locations and monitored 36 narcotics offenders.
The police registered two cases related to the sale of narcotic substances and arrested four persons. They also seized 1.2 kg of ganja and 30 pain-relief tablets.
The GCP said that through such special drives, they would continue to identify and take strict legal action against rowdies, habitual offenders, and persons involved in criminal activities.
Meanwhile, the Avadi City Police conducted a special drive on Thursday and Friday targeting rowdies and history-sheeters involved in criminal activities, as well as persons involved in offences related to banned narcotics, including ganja. During the drive, 112 rowdies and history-sheeters were arrested.
In the past week, the police arrested 24 individuals accused in 14 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and seized a total of 185 kg of ganja.
Avadi Police Commissioner Prem Anand Sinha said strict action would be taken against rowdies who continued to engage in criminal activities and that crime prevention measures would be intensified.
A similar drive was conducted for three consecutive days — May 19, 20, and 21 — across all police station limits under the Tambaram Police Commissionerate to curb habitual offences, narcotics trafficking, public nuisance, and other unlawful activities.
During the three-day intensive enforcement operation, 56 history-sheeters were secured and remanded in judicial custody. Additionally, 40 persons without history sheets, but involved in various criminal activities, were also secured and remanded.
Tambaram City Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar said the commissionerate was adopting a zero-tolerance approach towards narcotics offences, rowdyism, eve-teasing, stalking, cyber-related crimes, public nuisance, and unlawful activities affecting public peace and safety.
He further said stringent legal action would continue to be taken against drug peddlers, rowdies, habitual offenders, and persons indulging in illegal activities, including misuse of cyberspace, violations related to liquor sales, and activities affecting public order.
