The mother of honour killing victim Kavin Selvaganesh from Arumugamangalam, M. Tamil Selvi submitted a petition at the Thoothukudi District Collectorate on Monday, seeking the cancellation of bail allowed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to K. Saravanan, father of S. Surjith, who was arrested for murder of techie Kavin Selvaganesh.
In her petition, she urged the State government to file an appeal, seeking the cancellation of bail.
The petition stated that the accused belong to a caste Hindu community and were police officers. Since the case has been registered under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act), to ensure that the above case is investigated in a fair manner, it is highly essential, in the interest of justice, that the Tamil Nadu government file an appeal against the bail petition and seek its cancellation.
Ms. Selvi also submitted a petition seeking enactment of special Central law to prevent caste-based honour killings and to ensure justice for the brutal murder of her son.
According to the petition, Ms. Selvi stressed the need for a dedicated Central law against honour killing that would clearly define honour killing as distinct and heinous crime. The petition also stressed for mandate fast-track investigation and trial to ensure timely justice, prescribe stringent punishments for perpetrators and abettors regardless of the social or official status, establish robust witness protection and support mechanisms for victim’s families and require State to maintain detailed records of honour killings and implement preventive measures.
In support of her demands, cadre of VCK party staged a demonstration in front of the Thoothukudi District Collectorate.
