Jharkhand Police have arrested three persons in connection with the alleged hurling of petrol bombs at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) office in Ranchi’s Nivaranpur area. The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday (June 17, 2026), and the arrests were made later that day, police said on Thursday (June 18, 2026).

A Special Investigation Team constituted by Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan arrested two of the accused while they were allegedly attempting to flee on a Bihar-bound train. Police apprehended them at Rafiganj railway station in Bihar’s Gaya Ji district. A driver who allegedly transported the accused to the site of the incident was also arrested.

According to the police, the accused were brought to Kotwali police station in Ranchi, where one of them allegedly attempted to escape from custody by breaking a toilet window. Police said he was later traced to the Chanho police station area while travelling on a bus.

Police alleged that the accused attempted to snatch a weapon from personnel and fire at them. In the ensuing exchange of fire, one of the accused, identified as Saif Ansari, sustained a bullet injury. He was subsequently admitted to a government hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

According to the police, one of the petrol bombs landed on the roof of the RSS office, causing a fire, while another fell near the entrance but did not ignite.

An FIR has been registered at Chutia police station in Ranchi on a complaint filed by Narsingh Kumar, the RSS Prant (regional) office head. Police have invoked several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967.

In the FIR, the complainant stated that around 20 people were present in the RSS office at the time of the attack and that many lives could have been lost had the explosive device landed differently. The complaint further alleged that the attackers had planned to blow up the RSS office.

Earlier in the day, a three-member team of the National Investigation Agency visited the RSS office and held a closed-door meeting with prant pracharaks (regional organisers) before inspecting the site. The team examined the roof, where shards of broken bottles were found, and collected samples.

The Bomb Disposal Squad and the Forensic Science Laboratory team also visited the site and gathered evidence.

Following the attack, the Jharkhand unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party questioned the State’s law and order situation and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible. Police said CCTV footage of the incident helped in identifying and arresting the accused.
