The alleged back-to-back suicides by engineering students have prompted the authorities of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) to step up mental support systems and aid for those in distress.
They have finalised a multi-pronged approach to address the issue intensively from the new academic year. The initial plans discussed include appointment of additional counsellors, improved teacher-student interactions, and confidence-building programmes for students.
Two students of the School of Engineering were found dead in separate incidents at their rented accommodation over the past two weeks. Preliminary investigations by the Kalamassery police had suggested that both had been struggling with backlogs and mental stress.
Senior varsity officials termed the incidents as “unfortunate” while pointing out that remedial measures to reduce anxiety and improve the confidence of the learners would be strengthened. Counselling by professionally trained personnel will be extended to them. If required, counsellors will be appointed at the Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad. A meeting of the association of parents and teachers will be convened every two months to involve parents and brief them about such initiatives, they said.
Special focus will be given to improving the mental well-being of students by assuring them the all-round support of faculty members and the varsity administration. In hostels, wardens and support staff have been told to engage with students to identify their grievances better. Counsellors will attend the first general body meeting of hostel inmates convened in the new academic year to instil confidence among them and assure them support in tackling difficult situations.
A 21-year-old student of BTech Electrical and Electronics programme was found dead in his rented house on April 22. On April 30, a fourth year Civil Engineering student and a resident of Puthuvype was found dead in her rented accommodation.
