In view of regulations enforced by Election Commission of India, trade unions substituted May Day rallies with public meetings on Friday in Tiruppur district.
Public meetings were conducted by INTUC, AITUC, CITU and other major trade unions in Tiruppur city, Avinashi, Palladam, Uthukuli, Kangayam, Dharapuram and Udumalpet.
The Labour Welfare Department, conducted surprise raids on erring enterprises and imposed fines for defiance of the directive to declare holiday for the workers.
