In the last 19 days of Chithirai festival celebrations, the conservancy workers from the Madurai Corporation health wing had cleared 829.25 tonnes of garbage from about 40 wards comprising four zones, which were identified as ‘festival areas’, officials said here on Tuesday.
The celebrations, which started with the holy flag hoisting on April 19, ended with the Lord Kallazhagar’s return to His abode on May 4 from the Madurai city.
An estimated one million people had used the city during the festival days and the highest density of crowd was reported on the Car festival of the Goddess Meenakshi after the celestial wedding was performed. Likewise, yet another huge turnout of devotees was on the day of Lord Kallazhagar’s entry into the Vaigai river.
