Frequent and unannounced power cuts at the Sri Lankan Refugees Centre in Mandapam has made life miserable, said inmates here on Friday.
With summer at its peak, the people experienced severe heat from early hours of the day. With electricity supply getting disrupted frequently, the normal life was affected. The motor pumps were not working and as a result, water had to be drawn from the wells for bathing and other purposes.
The fans and lights were not working during the day. In the nights, the voltage fluctuations forced the children and women to step out of their dwellings. Mosquito menace was also unavoidable as they had to sit in the verandah.
Under such circumstances, when the inmates numbering around 1500 appealed to the authorities concerned to set right the issues and ensure electricity supply was provided without any interruptions.
The TANGEDCO authorities assured to look into the grievance and take prompt action after which they dispersed. About 50 of the inmates participated in the agitation near the Refugee centre, police said.
