In the restaurant industry, “86” refers to a secret or off-menu item that is not available to just anybody — only to those in the know. It is a fitting name for Number 86, a weekend-only speakeasy bar in Kalyan Nagar. Headed by siblings Arunima and Pranav Singla, the bar reinvents the familiar flavours of Bengaluru with a twist, from a curd rice-infused vodka cocktail to jackfruit gochujang tacos.

Amidst all the large-format breweries, a new type of drinking experience has taken hold of Bengaluru: the speakeasy. An exclusive place that promises secrecy, mystery, and delicious cocktails. Bengaluru’s discerning drinkers are looking for curated menus that go beyond the standard mojito. Number 86 is the newest addition to the city’s growing collection of artisanal cocktail bars.

Everything about your evening here is an experience, right from solving a riddle just to find the speakeasy entrance. There is even a Post-it pad on every table, where you can write down your worries, and “86” them by passing through the shredder next to the bar. The space is warmly lit and conducive to a relaxing evening.

The cocktail menu

The cocktails, executed by mixologist Ramesh Kumar, draw on regional flavours. There is Home Turf, made with vodka that has been infused with curd rice. The chilli-salt rim adds a piquant touch. We also try other savoury drinks— rum-based Bombay Talkies has a corn-based flavour profile with hints of pineapple and popcorn syrup, while the vodka-based Meth Lab packs a punch with notes of fenugreek and banana. My favourite, however, is Lalbagh 1760, a summery gin number finished with fresh melon juice.

There is also an Omakase-style section, where the bartender crafts a drink specifically for you based on a particular memory or mood. The overall effect is that of a theatrical performance, rather than an ordinary night out. “Number 86 is built around the idea of discovery. A space where the experience begins before you even walk in. We wanted to move away from conventional nightlife and create something more immersive, where curiosity leads the way. It’s intimate, a little mysterious, and designed for people who enjoy the feeling of being ‘in’ on something,” says Arunima.

Pub grab reimagined

While the food menu may not be as inventive as the cocktails, it features pub grub classics with a twist. We start off with crowd pleasers like the Andhra fried chicken and goat cheese phyllo pockets. We also try the sambal pork tonkatsu. The fried pork is coated with sambal paste, but the dish does not really work because it was not as crisp as we would like.

The table prefers the jackfruit gochujang tacos for their sweet and tangy flavour. The soft shell tacos have smashed patties of jackfruit, however the sauces overpower the taco. Each serving has only one taco. The ghee roast Korean prawns, spiced with gochujang, were also a highlight. The dish is served on a bed of rice paper chips, which adds a punch to the juicy prawns.

For the main course, the menu offers elevated versions of classic post-pub dinners. We order the burnt garlic pad thai, and the table especially likes the brown butter gnocchi for its indulgent creamy sauce. We opt for a boozy dessert— late checkout, a tiramisu-flavoured cocktail that is just as decadent as the food.

The cocktail menu is definitely the highlight of this place. The food menu is not as inventive, and none of the dishes really stand out. Number 86 is not on the same level as other speakeasies in town, but it is relatively budget friendly. True to the speakeasy spirit, it does not announce itself loudly on social media. The location is sent to your number upon booking a table; even the menu is not available online. If you are looking for an evening that goes a little beyond the usual dinner and drinks, Number 86 is for you.

Cost for two ₹3000. Open on evenings from Friday to Sunday. In Kalyan Nagar. For more details, call 8496886868
