In an attempt to address the stray dog menace scientifically and prevent conflicts between residents and animal lovers, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched specially designed ‘Dog Feeding Sheds’ in three locations across the city under a pilot project.
Municipal Commissioner K. Mayur Ashok said the initiative aims to facilitate regular dog feeders while improving sanitation management in the city. The sheds have been set up to discourage the practice of feeding stray dogs on roads and in public places, which often leads to unhygienic conditions and causes stray dogs to gather in packs.
The first phase of the project has been launched in Ramireddy Nagar and A.T. Agraharam areas. The primary objective is to reduce the movement of stray dogs and attacks in residential neighbourhoods, while preventing food waste accumulation on roads that often attracts flies and mosquitoes.
The Municipal Commissioner appealed to animal lovers and residents to feed stray dogs only at the designated sheds, instead of public spaces. He said the initiative would help dogs develop a feeding habit at the designated locations, thereby reducing inconvenience and fear among residents.
He urged the citizens to cooperate with the civic body’s efforts in making Guntur a safer and cleaner city.
