Although Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has put up an intense showdown in some constituencies of Kanniyakumari district including Killiyoor, Colachel and Kanniyakumari, traditional players retained all six Assembly segments of the district.

Of the six constituencies of the district, three witnessed direct contests between national rivals Congress and BJP. This also included TMC(M), which contested in the lotus symbol in Killiyoor. BJP was fielded to face CPI(M) and DMK in Padmanabhapuram and Nagercoil Assembly segments. The Kanniyakumari segment alone saw direct contests between DMK and AIADMK.
