‘Diesel shortage’ is hurting farmers, aqua sector and aut...

YSRCP general secretary and former Vice-Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Agriculture Mission M.V.S. Nagi Reddy has alleged that the diesel shortage in Andhra Pradesh is causing severe hardship to farmers, aquaculture operators and auto-rickshaw drivers.

He warned that the situation could adversely affect the State’s economy if immediate corrective measures are not taken.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Nagi Reddy claimed that the diesel shortage had entered its fifth day, forcing farmers and transport operators to spend hours in queues at fuel stations. He questioned why the problem appeared to be acute in Andhra Pradesh despite the presence of a strategic crude oil storage facility and refinery in Visakhapatnam.

The YSRCP leader said the shortage had come at a crucial time for the agricultural sector, with paddy harvesting underway in several districts. The lack of diesel, he alleged, was affecting the operation of tractors and harvesters, causing delays in farm activities and increasing production costs.

He claimed that some farmers were being forced to procure diesel at higher prices through unofficial channels.

Mr. Nagi Reddy highlighted the impact on the aquaculture sector, stating that diesel-powered aerators used in shrimp ponds are vital for maintaining oxygen levels, particularly during power outages. Any disruption in their operation could result in significant losses for aqua farmers, he said.

He also alleged that auto-rickshaw drivers and transport operators were facing difficulties due to fuel scarcity, resulting in reduced earnings. The State government, however, has maintained that steps are being taken to ensure adequate diesel supplies across Andhra Pradesh.
