Five Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor outlets have been identified for closure in the district following the State government’s direction to shut shops functioning near places of worship, educational institutions and bus stands.
On Tuesday (May 12, 2026), Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directed officials to identify retail liquor outlets located within 500 metres of educational institutions, places of worship and bus stands across the State within two weeks. A total of 717 outlets were found to be functioning in violation of the norm. According to officials, the outlets identified for closure include 276 shops near places of worship, 186 near educational institutions and 255 near bus stands.
Following the order, TASMAC officials conducted a survey and identified five liquor outlets for closure in the district. Steps are under way to shut the outlets, officials said.
