Renovation and reconstruction work had commenced at the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation’s (TTDC) Hotel Tamil Nadu in Tharangambadi, raising hopes for the revival of affordable accommodation facilities in the heritage coastal town. The hotel had remained defunct for nearly a decade.

Official sources said the project, being implemented at an estimated cost of ₹6.92 crore, began on March 23, and is expected to be completed by March 24, 2027. The work includes the construction and upgrade of guest rooms, kitchen, restaurant, and a new reception building.

According to Tourism Department officials, the proposed G+1 structure would house 16 rooms, with eight rooms each on the ground and first floors. The project would include a cooking hall, a new welcome hall, and other visitor facilities.

A senior Tourism Department official said the building was designed in a Dutch architectural style resembling the Governor’s bungalow located in front og the historic Danish fort in Tharangambadi.

“We are planning to construct an open restaurant on the rooftop with a beach view, which is expected to attract tourists,” the official said.

Officials added that foundation work was under way. Tourism stakeholders and civic representatives had repeatedly urged the State government to revive the long-defunct TTDC hotel, citing lack of affordable accommodation facilities in the town, which is known for its Danish-era heritage structures, churches, and the historic Masilamaninathar temple.

The hotel, constructed in the year 2000 and inaugurated by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, was closed in 2017 reportedly due to poor revenue generation. Since then, tourists visiting the town are dependent on premium private resorts and hotels.

Pon. Rajendran, vice-chairman of the Tharangambadi Town Panchayat, said reopening the TTDC hotel would help promote inclusive tourism by providing affordable lodging options for middle-income and student travellers.
