The CPI has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu demanding strict implementation of pharmaceutical laws and reforms to safeguard public health.
CPI national secretary K. Ramakrishna, national executive member Muppalla Nageswara Rao and State secretary G. Eswaraiah met Mr. Naidu on Thursday and expressed concern over alleged large-scale violations of the Pharmacy Act, 1948, and Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
They highlighted the threat posed by fake and adulterated medicines, and urged the government to strengthen regulatory enforcement mechanism. They also sought strict implementation of Section 42 of the Pharmacy Act and Rule 65 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, alleging that several retail medical shops were operating without the supervision of registered pharmacists. They called for stringent action against violators and imposition of heavy penalties under the Jan Vishwas Act, 2023.
Raising alarm over circulation of counterfeit antibiotics and adulterated intravenous fluids, the CPI leaders sought establishment of a special surveillance mechanism to crack down on fake drug networks. They urged the government to invoke stringent penal provisions under Section 27 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act against the offenders.
They also stressed the need for greater transparency in drug licensing and inspection systems. The CPI leaders demanded mandatory annual inspections of medical shops and strict verification of pharmacist registrations before issuing or renewing licences under Forms 20 and 21.
Further, they alleged that the dominance of pharmaceutical trade mafias was affecting the quality and availability of generic medicines. They urged the government to ensure affordable and quality generic medicines, while strengthening the counselling role of pharmacists and monitoring unethical trade practices.
The CPI leaders proposed creation of a ‘State Drug Intelligence and Enforcement Wing’ to monitor counterfeit drug cases district-wise and publicly disclose details of offenders. The leaders recommended implementation of a barcode-based traceability system for medicines.
Mr. Naidu reportedly assured the delegation that the issues would be examined seriously and appropriate action initiated.
