For months now, the Chennai Metro Rail’s station construction work at Indira Nagar in Adyar for the phase II project has left the roads near the site damaged, causing inconvenience to the commuters and residents.
Chennai Metro Rail has been building stations in underground and elevated networks in many areas for the 118.9-km phase II project. As part of the corridor 3 construction from Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Adyar, Chennai Metro Rail has been carrying out station work near the Indira Nagar Water Tank.
For months now, the quality of the road in Indira Nagar Second Avenue and a small section of the Third Avenue near the signal has deteriorated making it an uncomfortable ride for commuters.
L.J. Singaravelan, president of Adyar Kasturba Nagar-South Residents’ Welfare Association says, commuters find it difficult to take right from First Avenue to the Second Avenue near the Indira Nagar Water Tank Signal. “The road space has drastically shrunk due to the station construction work, and the condition of the road has worsened significantly in the last few months, making it difficult, particularly for the motorists,” he adds.
Krishnakumar, a resident of Indira Nagar, says he has to cross these two stretches either to travel to Velachery or Sardar Patel Road. “There should be some accountability. Shouldn’t they relay the road on periodic intervals when they know it is in a poor shape due to their work? It is also tough for the residents to walk,” he said.
According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), they have already informed the contractor regarding the problem. “We will relay the road around the site at the earliest,” an official said.
