Tiruchi Corporation has invited a re-tender for the development of a riverfront park along the banks of the Cauvery in the city.
The riverfront park will be developed in two phases to create a recreational zone and a dedicated space for pilgrims to perform rituals on the ghats, catering to the demands of the residents.
The project will be developed on two stretches along the Cauvery at an estimated cost of ₹50.47 crore, funded primarily through assistance from KfW Bank of Germany, along with additional allocations sanctioned under the Capital Grant Funds and the Corporation’s General Funds. An additional ₹2.38 crore had been sanctioned for appointing an agency to maintain the facilities for five years.
The civic body had earlier floated a tender for the project in January and identified a contractor. However, civil works could not commence due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. The Corporation has now cancelled the earlier tender and issued a re-tender for the project. As per the tender notification, the last date for submission of proposals is July 23.
Official sources said the earlier tender was cancelled after procedural lapses were noticed. Sufficient time had not been provided to bidders for submitting quotations as prescribed under the tendering process. Officials said tenders that were not issued in accordance with the prescribed procedures are being cancelled and re-tendered to ensure transparency and compliance with norms.
Under Phase I, estimated at ₹24.47 crore, covers a 1.5-km stretch on the southern bank of the river between the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway and the railway track on Odathurai Road. The area will be developed into a recreational zone featuring a walking track, granite benches, street lights, a children’s park, a yoga hall, an amphitheatre for cultural events, and a watchtower.
Phase II of the project, at a cost of ₹26 crore, will be taken up along a 750-metre stretch on the northern bank between Amma Mandapam and Geethapuram in Srirangam. It will provide dedicated facilities for pilgrims, including bathing showers, restrooms, and designated spaces to perform religious rituals in an organised manner.
The entire project is expected to be completed within two years from the commencement of work.
