As a prelude to monsoon operations, the corporation has kept the infrastructure up to date by flattening of cutting slopes and soil nailing to improve slope stability; rock bolting and shotcreting works in tunnels and cuttings to strengthen geological formations; provided protective structures, including Gabion walls, retaining walls, Micropiles and Boulder Netting to mitigate geotechnical risks; cleaning and concrete lining of side drains and catch water drains etc.
KRCL said ongoing and completed geo-safety works have substantially reduced boulder fall and soil slippages incidents in the last one decade.
Patrolling and surveillance
KRCL has deployed 657 trained personnel for round-the-clock patrolling at identified locations while keeping ready BRN wagon- mounted earthmovers at four places for rapid response. It has stationed Rail Maintenance Vehicles at nine locations, while Tower Wagons have been kept ready at seven stations.
Operational safety
Loco pilots will restrict train speed to 40 kmph during low visibility and stop trains if water levels exceed 100 mm above rail level. Accident Relief Medical Equipment with fully equipped medical kits / tools are kept at key locations while Self-Propelled Accident Relief Medical Vans (ARMVs) with operation theatres and emergency medical aid are stationed at Ratnagiri and Verna.
While safety personnel are provided mobile phones, loco pilots and train managers are equipped with walkie-talkies. Emergency Communication Sockets are installed at 1 km intervals along the route and at every 400m in tunnels exceeding 2 km in length.
Self-recording rain gauges are active at nine stations to monitor and alert officials about rainfall levels. Flood warning systems are functional at key bridges to alert officials if water levels reach dangerous levels. Anemometers have been installed on major viaducts and bridges at four locations. Control rooms at Belapur, Ratnagiri and Madgaon work round-the-clock while CCTV surveillance at all 72 stations is monitored through Station Master offices and nine RPF posts.
