The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made its first electoral breakthrough in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry, securing two of the five Assembly constituencies. The All India N.R. Congress, the DMK, and an Independent candidate won one seat each.
In a major upset, V. Vigneshwaran, a BJP rebel, won the Nedungadu (SC) constituency — the only reserved seat in the district — as an independent defeating the incumbent and the lone woman member of the Puducherry Assembly S. Chandrapriyanga of the AINRC. Mr. Vigneshwaran secured 14,368 votes against Ms. Chandrapriyanga’s 9,869, registering a margin of 4,499 votes.
