As many as 47,709 traffic violations were recorded by speed guns and other cameras linked to the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), in Udupi district, between May 21 and May 26.

These fixed cameras have been installed on Karkala-Dhoopadakatte, Padubidri-Uchhila, Kaup-Dandatheerta, Kota-Thekkatte, Gangolli-Trasi and Byndoor-Nayanakatte road stretches.

Apart from the speed radar gun, AI-based automatic number plate reader cameras were also used. These cameras record overspeeding, triple riding, helmetless riding, driving without a seat belt, use of mobile phones while driving, one-way violations and other offences. They capture images of the violating vehicles and transmit them to the police control room.

In a statement, the police said that of the 47,709 recorded violations, 12,440 were related to not wearing seat belts, 11,509 to helmetless riding, 2,783 to one-way violations, 2,438 to triple riding, 2,346 to overspeeding by heavy motor vehicles, and 1,110 to overspeeding by other vehicles.

Traffic personnel examined photographs of the violations and issued challans to 243 vehicle owners, asking them to pay fines. Those living near police stations in Udupi district were asked to visit and pay the fine, while challans were sent by post to those staying outside, with instructions to pay the amount within seven days of receipt.

Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said fixed cameras will be installed at 14 new locations in the district. These cameras will help detect vehicles using fake or damaged number plates. On an average, about 3,000 traffic violations are recorded by these cameras every day. As they help track the movement of vehicles, they will also aid criminal investigations.

A new control room will be set up to examine images related to traffic violations and the feed from 200 CCTVs installed at vital locations across the district, Mr. Shankar said.
