A five-day in-house workshop on the “Review of Glossary Terms in Testing and Evaluation in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Odia, Hindi, and Telugu Languages” began at the National Testing Service-India (NTS-I) of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) here on Monday. The workshop will continue until May 22.

The programme aims to review, refine, and standardise technical terminology related to testing and evaluation practices across Indian languages, in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework 2023.

The workshop has brought together linguists, educationists, translators, and academic reviewers from universities and institutions across the country, alongside faculty members of NTS–I. The initiative seeks to ensure conceptual clarity, linguistic precision, and consistency in the educational terminology used in Indian languages, a press release said.

The workshop is significant in the context of multilingual education and emphasis on Indian languages in teaching, learning, and assessment under the NEP 2020. The standardised terminology is expected to support teachers, curriculum developers, translators, researchers, and learners, while improving the quality of testing and evaluation practices.

The current review process follows an earlier phase in which the NTS-I resource persons translated technical terms from English into various Scheduled Indian languages. During the workshop, experts will critically examine and refine these translated terms through collaborative discussions and consultations, the release added.

P.R. Dharmesh Fernandez, professor-cum-Deputy Director of CIIL, who inaugurated the workshop, highlighted the need for linguistically consistent and academically reliable terminology to strengthen inclusive educational practices.

He emphasised the CIIL’s role in promoting multilingual academic resources and language-based research.

Aiswariya Shajan, resource person in Malayalam at NTS-India, Murali Mohana N., officer-general, NTS-India were present. Distinguished scholars and experts from leading universities and educational institutions across the country are participating in the workshop.

Pankaj Dwivedi, assistant director of CIIL and officer in charge of NTS-India, is coordinating the programme.
