The Tiruchi City Traffic Police has been equipped with speed radar guns to curtail overspeeding by vehicle users within the city limits and reduce accident rate. The devices have been procured under the Road Safety Fund.
Three hand-held speed radar guns have been procured with one device each having been allotted to the Cantonment , Fort, and Srirangam Traffic Police units. Armed with this device, traffic police personnel have been stationing themselves at important roads within the city to zero in on overspeeding vehicles and impose fines on their drivers.
The speed at which the vehicle was proceeding would be displayed in the device held by the traffic police personnel. If the vehicle was found overspeeding or the drivers indulging in rash driving they would be stopped and penalised. A traffic police constable posted a few distance away from the officer armed with the device would stop the overspeeding vehicle upon getting the signal from the officer, said police sources.
The task of checking overspeeding by using the device was being done on important roads including the Anna Nagar Link road adjoining the Combined Court complex and along the Oyyamari road. The permitted speed within the city limits was 30 kmph to 40 kmph, said the sources. The device was being used to deter vehicle users from overspeeding and rash driving and thereby curb accidents within Tiruchi city, the sources added.
