Three persons from Vellore district have been arrested by Madurai City Police on charges of extorting money from two senior citizens through ‘digital arrest’.
The police identified the accused as J. Abdul Fazul Ur Rahman, 34, Sahabudeen, 34, and Javid, 26.
The police said that the trio had called the retired officials in the guise of police officers from Crime Branch in Chennai.
They threatened the victims claiming that they had got a complaint from Anti Terrorism Squad from Lucknow that illegal transactions to terrorist organisation had been done through their bank accounts.
Later, someone had made a video call to the victims claiming to be Lucknow police and threatened them that the Supreme Court had issued an arrest warrant against them.
The accused then forced them to part with huge sums of money through online transactions.
Madurai City Cyber Crime Police registered a case and tracked the accused.
