The Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP) has started producing Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) through the bio-mining process at Njeliyanparamba.
The first consignment of RDF was dispatched to the Dalmia Cement factory in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, where it will be utilised as a source of energy. The consignment was jointly flagged off by Kozhikode Corporation Mayor O. Sadasivan and District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh recently. The initiative aims to clear the legacy waste accumulated over decades and reclaim the land for productive use.
According to KSWMP officials, once the waste is cleared and the land is fully reclaimed, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) will set up a compressed biogas (CBG) plant at the site. Seven acres of land will be handed over for the purpose.
Biomining is currently under way on 12.6 acres of the total 17.5-acre area at Njeliyanparamba. It is estimated that 2.30 lakh cubic metres of legacy waste have accumulated at the site.
Through the biomining process, waste is segregated into various components such as soil, plastic, metal, and wood, which are then processed scientifically in compliance with regulations for reuse. The operations, which began in March 2026, are now in full swing and functioning around the clock.
The total project cost is ₹31.20 crore. Provided weather conditions and other adverse factors do not cause delays, the biomining work is expected to be completed within 10 months. Chennai-based Sigma Global Environ Solutions Private Limited is executing the project.
