The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed floating a tender for the operation and maintenance of the sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity of two million litres a day at Valankulam, after complaints were raised about the facility being non-functional.
The move comes in the wake of complaints by an NGO alleging that the plant was not functioning, raising concerns over the discharge of untreated sewage into the lake.
Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja recently inspected the facility and directed the City Engineer to submit a report on its functioning. Officials said further action would be taken based on the findings of the report.
The proposed operation and maintenance contract, estimated at ₹30 lakh, is aimed at restoring the functioning of the plant and ensuring proper treatment of sewage entering the waterbody.
The proposal is likely to be placed before the Corporation Council for approval at its meeting on June 17.
