The election expenditure accounts of candidates who contested the recently concluded Assembly elections in Coimbatore district will be scrutinised during a reconciliation meeting to be held at the Collectorate on May 29.
A total of 183 candidates contested from the district’s 10 Assembly constituencies. The Election Commission had fixed the maximum expenditure limit at ₹40 lakh for each candidate. Candidates must submit their expenditure accounts within 25 days of completion of vote counting.
Seven expenditure observers were appointed to monitor campaign spending in the district. Officials said the observers, along with video surveillance teams, tracked campaign activities and verified expenses incurred by the candidates.
During the meeting, candidates will have to submit records and clarifications sought by expenditure observers. If discrepancies are found, candidates will be given one week to furnish revised details. Failure to do so could attract disqualification from contesting future elections, officials said.
After scrutiny and approval by the Election Commission, the expenditure statements will be uploaded on the Commission’s website for public access.
