1. Sattankulam father-son custodial deaths case: All nine accused policemen convicted

Six years after a trader P. Jayaraj and his son J. Benicks died of custodial torture during the COVID-19 lockdown at the Sattankulam Police Station in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, the First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai convicted all nine accused policemen.

Judge G. Muthukumaran said he will pronounce the quantum of sentence on March 30.

2. Tamil Nadu Assembly election: AIADMK allots 27 seats to BJP, 18 to PMK

The BJP, one of the key constituents of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu, has been allocated 27 seats for the Assembly election, seven higher than in 2021. 

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has been allotted 18 assembly constituencies, five less than what it contested five years ago. Headed by T.T.V. Dhinakaran, the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), a breakaway group of the AIADMK, has got 11 seats. 

3. Gautham Vasudev Menon loses case in Madras HC, ordered to pay ₹4.25 crore to R.S. Infotainment

The Madras High Court dismissed an appeal filed jointly by film director Gautham Vasudev Menon and his partnership firm Photon Factory against a single judge’s order directing them to pay ₹4.25 crore, along with interest at the rate of 12% per annum from May 2010, to another film production firm named R.S. Infotainment led by S. Elred Kumar.

A Division Bench of Justices P. Velmurugan and K. Govindarajan Thilakavadi refused to entertain the appeal preferred in May 2022 and upheld the order passed by Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy on April 5, 2022. The single judge’s order was passed on a civil suit filed by R.S. Infotainment in 2013 accusing Mr. Menon of not having completed an untitled movie described as ‘production no. 6.’
