The mercury crossing the 48°C mark is no longer unusual in Andhra Pradesh. For the third time in less than a week and the second consecutive day, daytime temperatures exceeded 48°C on Monday (May 25, 2026), reaching 48.1°C in Kankipadu and Penamaluru in Krishna district.

According to information from a weather expert who chose to remain anonymous, the present situation is arising due to a combination of factors, including urbanisation, development of heat domes, and other weather systems. A heat dome occurs when the atmosphere traps hot air, as if a lid is placed on a pot, creating a dome of intense heat conditions in the space enclosed by it. Such conditions may continue in the State until the weekend, the expert said.
The APSDMA and the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its release on Monday, said heatwaves and hot and humid conditions may last until May 29.
The disaster management authority forecasted severe heatwaves in 26 mandals and heatwaves in 137 mandals on Tuesday (May 26). On Wednesday (May 27), severe heatwave conditions may affect 70 mandals, with heatwave conditions in 176 mandals.
