Himanta Biswa Sarma will become the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Assam for the second straight term when he is sworn in today (May 12, 2026).

A galaxy of VVIPs from diverse fields is expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony at the College of Veterinary Science Playground on the southern edge of Guwahati. They are headlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Chief Ministers of 22 NDA-ruled States and Union Territories, and BJP leaders, including national president Nitin Nabin.

A few MLAs, including at least one each from the AGP and the Bodoland People’s Front, are likely to take oath as Ministers, along with Mr. Sarma. Assam can have a maximum of 19 Ministers.

    Himanta Biswa Sarma will become the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Assam for the second straight term when he is sworn in on Tuesday (May 12, 2026).

    The only other non-Congress Chief Minister who served two terms is Prafulla Kumar Mahanta of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), but his tenures were separated by five years. Since the end of his second term in 2001, the AGP has been a minor partner of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mr. Sarma’s party.

    Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Monday (May 12) hailed the third consecutive victory of the NDA in Assam, welcoming the Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government ahead of its swearing-in ceremony.

    Speaking with ANI, Mr. Paswan lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and attributed people’s trust in him as the reason for the BJP’s hat-trick in Assam and historic victory in West Bengal. He asserted that the entire country has faith in the “double-engine government” for development.

    “The way the people of Assam have once again chosen a government that follows Prime Minister Modi’s vision and the path of development led by Himanta Biswa Sarma shows that a historic victory has been achieved in Assam, and we have also formed the government in Bengal. Across the country, people want a double-engine government so that development can gain even more momentum,” he said.

    After the NDA recorded a massive victory in the Assam Assembly elections, BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to be sworn in for his second term today.

    The BJP leaders hailed NDA’s poll victory and resolve for Viksit Bharat at 2047.
