Cyberabad police virtually reach out to parents, children ahead of tech-driven student transport network rollout

In an attempt to address congestion levels around schools, Cyberabad police is planning a technology-driven student mobility network aimed at reducing traffic chaos and improving child safety.

The proposed ‘Student Mobility Digital Public Infrastructure’ was discussed during a virtual outreach meeting chaired by Cyberabad Police Commissioner M. Ramesh with parents of school children through a YouTube interaction hosted from the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate on Friday.

According to police, the proposed system will integrate RTC buses and private transport operators through a police-verified and digitally monitored platform to create a safer and more organised student transport ecosystem across Cyberabad.

Addressing parents during the interaction, the Commissioner said traffic congestion around schools had become a major civic concern affecting road safety, children’s well-being and family coordination. He noted that parents rushing to drop or pick up children often drove under pressure, leading to unsafe situations and accidents, while communication gaps during pick-up timings had in some cases left children stranded at schools.

Police said the initiative is intended as a long-term civic mobility reform rather than a temporary traffic management measure.

A joint survey conducted by the Cyberabad police and the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) covering 526 educational institutions and nearly 4.1 lakh students identified major gaps in the existing student transport system. The survey revealed that nearly two lakh vehicles converged around schools during peak dispersal hours within just a 15-minute window, creating congestion levels that sometimes exceed Cyberabad’s IT corridor rush hour.

The proposed framework, inspired by the Transport for London model, will include route optimisation, compliance monitoring, centralised operational control and digital coordination under the governance of the SCSC.

Police said all participating vehicles would be equipped with CCTV systems and monitored through the Cyberabad Police Command and Control Centre. The model will also involve police-verified gig workers, ASHAs and Anganwadi workers as attendants and mobility supervisors to strengthen student safety and create additional livelihood opportunities.

Officials said a startup already operating in the mobility sector is being evaluated as the technology and ecosystem partner for the project. The rollout is expected to begin with student mobility data analysis, gate intelligence systems, parental awareness programmes and controlled route planning.

The virtual meeting reportedly witnessed participation from around 5,000 parents along with educational institutions and other stakeholders.
