The two Assembly election victories of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in constituencies within the city are evidence of public approval for the party’s governance performance in the civic body, Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V.V.Rajesh has said. Among the three seats won by the BJP in Kerala, two - Nemom and Kazhakuttam- are located within the Corporation area. “The BJP-led administration, which took over a few months ago, has been carrying out its responsibilities efficiently. The Assembly elections were in a way also an appraisal of our performance in this period. From the results, it is clear that the public are in approval of our performance. Both our leaders who won have vast experience as Union Ministers in the past, which can be useful for the Corporation in getting major central projects,” he said. Mr.Rajesh said that the results are also a verdict against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Ministers and MLAs who targeted the BJP-led Corporation with false claims. In recent weeks, General Education Minister V.Sivankutty and V.K.Prasanth MLA, both former Mayors, had criticised the Corporation for its alleged failures in addressing waste management-related issues and drinking water scarcity. “The Opposition parties should come up with creative criticism instead of using false narratives to attack the Corporation. Ministers and MLAs levelled baseless allegations for the sole reason that the BJP is in power in the Corporation. Even the government machinery was used to target us,” he alleged. He said that discussions are being held with the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Managing Director regarding the clauses of the contract entered into between the Corporation and the KSRTC during the handing over of the 115 electric bus fleet to the transport entity under the Smart City project. Mr.Rajesh sparked the dispute last December by accusing the KSRTC of contractual violation by extending the operation of the Smart City project electric buses to the mofussil neighbourhoods.
