Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries and Mandya MP H.D. Kumaraswamy on Sunday (June 21, 2026) underscored the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life, describing it as India’s invaluable cultural heritage and an effective tool for achieving physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Speaking after inaugurating the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations at the PET Cricket Ground in Mandya, Mr. Kumaraswamy said yoga offers a holistic approach to health by fostering harmony between the body, mind and soul. “Even 15 to 20 minutes of yoga and meditation every day can significantly improve physical and mental health,” he added.

Noting that International Yoga Day is now being observed across the globe, Mr. Kumaraswamy said yoga has evolved into a universally accepted practice that promotes wellness and inner balance. He described it as one of India’s greatest contributions to humanity.

In his address, Dr. Trinetra Mahanta Shivayogi Swamiji said yoga is far more than a physical exercise regime and should be embraced as a way of life. He urged children and youth to remain rooted in India’s cultural values and traditions.

Regular yoga practice improves flexibility, boosts immunity and enhances cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive health, he said. Yoga also helps alleviate stress, anxiety and depression while promoting concentration, self-discipline and spiritual growth, he added.

The event was organised jointly by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of AYUSH, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, School Education Department, My Bharat Centre, Red Cross Society, AFI Mandya, SPYSS and various yoga organisations.

Purushottamanandanatha Swamiji was also present. Deputy Commissioner Dr. Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat K.R. Nandini, Additional Deputy Commissioner B. C. Shivanandamurthy, Superintendent of Police Shobharani V.J. and other officials attended the programme.
