Mumbai Police Commissioner has constituted a Special Investigation Team to look into offences related to the procurement of birth registration certificates using documents produced by forgery.
The team’s formation follows the discovery of a number of certificates obtained through means that involve fraud. After BJP leader Kirit Somaiyya had levelled allegations about forged birth certificates, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde had directed the BMC to crack down on such cases.
The Crime Branch, Mumbai, was investigating the offences. During the investigation, and from complaints, it emerged that several birth registration certificates had been obtained using documents produced by forgery. The Commissioner of Police then considered the scope and seriousness of the matter before constituting the team.
The investigation team is headed by the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). The team comprises the Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Mumbai; the Additional Commissioner of Police (Special Branch), Mumbai; and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection), Crime Branch, Mumbai.
