Police arrested 60 individuals for their alleged involvement in 51 property offenses that were reported in April 2026, Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi said.
He was addressing a press conference as part of the “Monthly Crime Mela,” a programme to brief about arrests and actions taken regarding property offenses reported in April 2026, at the police conference hall on Saturday (May 23, 2026).
Mr. Bagchi said that during April 2026, as many as 68 cases of property offenses were reported in the city. Special teams formed to investigate the cases were able to detect 51 of them using technical methods. He also mentioned that property worth ₹33.67 lakh— which includes 924.14 grams of gold, 4,529.96 grams of silver, and ₹3.12 lakh in cash—was recovered. Additionally, about 473 missing mobile phones worth ₹70 lakh were also recovered. Altogether, the total value of the property recovered was approximately ₹1.04 crore, he said.
Of the total 51 cases detected, two were robberies, three were daytime house break-ins, ten were night-time house break-ins, one was a snatching incident, twelve were motorcycle thefts, and three were auto theft cases, among others.
Mr. Bagchi said that as part of preventive measures, during the month of April, as many as 502 CCTV cameras were installed at various places in the city. About 190 crime awareness meetings were conducted by the crime wing officers, who created awareness about the types of crimes, criminals and the importance of installation of CCTV cameras, he added.
He also said that special patrolling in crime prone areas was conducted with crime teams during day and night. Drone beats are also being carried out in isolated areas for surveillance on criminals and illegal activities, he said.
During the meeting, Mr. Bagchi, DCP Crimes Latha Madhuri and others senior police officials handed over the stolen/lost property to the rightful owners.
