Two persons were killed in a road accident near Nanguneri on Friday evening.

Police said a car proceeding to Nagercoil hit from behind an autorickshaw carrying schoolchildren even as it was crossing Marukalkurichi intersection near Nanguneri toll plaza on Friday evening.

Car driver Rajamohan lost control after hitting the autorickshaw, and the vehicle overturned. Radha, 72, of Nagrecoil, who was travelling in the car, died on the spot while another occupant of the car, Natarajan, 70, also from Nagercoil, sustained grievous injuries. He was rushed to hospital immediately, but he died on the way.

Five schoolchildren, who were travelling in the autorickshaw, sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Nanguneri police have registered a case.
