Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has sought an urgent report on the circumstances in which five of the convicts in the Periye twin murder case were granted parole.
Mr. Chennithala has directed Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Biswanath Sinha to look into the issue and submit a report. All aspects surrounding the decision to allow parole should be examined, according to the Home Minister’s direction. Action will be taken on the basis of the report, a statement issued in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday said.
First accused Peethambaran and four others were granted parole. Reportedly, the Prisons department had initiated steps in this regard just before the previous CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front government stepped down.
The case pertains to the murder of Youth Congress activists Sharath Lal and Kripesh on February 17, 2019, near Periye in Kasaragod district. In January 2025, the CBI Special Court awarded life imprisonment for ten of the accused on two counts, for murder and conspiracy and five years of imprisonment for four others including former Uduma MLA and CPI(M) leader K.V. Kunhiraman helping Saji George, the second accused, to escape police custody.
